Beginning Etching

Class Description

This is a beginning course in etching covering hard ground and aquatint on copper. Throughout this course students will learn how to polish and prep copper plates, create a basic line etching, and print an edition from their plates. Each student should leave with a basic understanding of copper etching with ferric chloride, printing one and multiple colors on their plates, transferring images onto plates, and curating and signing prints. Each student will leave this class with an edition of 5 prints from their plates.

Course Agenda

Week 1: Demos on prepping and polishing copper plates, show examples of etching, have the students prep, polish, and coat plates with hard ground

Week 2: Demos on how to draw and etch designs into plates, have students draw and etch their designs into their plates

Week 3: Demo on how to print plates, have students print their designs onto paper

About the Instructor – Autumn Johnson

Autumn Johnson is an artist from Southeast Ohio who primarily works in etching on copper with themes surrounding nature, identity, and memory. With a BFA from Ohio University and an MFA from Louisiana State University, they have taught and worked in Kentucky, Louisiana, and Michigan.
