Cyanotype

Class Description

Be introduced to the art of cyanotype- a photographic printmaking process. Students will work with pre-treated paper to expose in the sun and an exposure unit, as well as mixing their own chemistry and applying it to a surface to then expose. We will be working with objects and materials to lay across surfaces to create intricate designs, as well as making our own stencils using markers and acetate sheets

Course Agenda
Cyanotype utilizing pre-treated substrates and mixing own chemistry
 

Session 1:

  • Introduction to cyanotype — presentation and show & tell

  • Demonstration using pre-treated paper and the exposure unit

  • Create a stencil using paper or transparency and marker

  • Expose stencil onto pre-treated paper using the exposure unit

  • Develop cyanotypes using water and hydrogen peroxide

Session 2:

  • Mix cyanotype chemistry and apply to paper

  • Create a new stencil or work with objects brought from home

  • Expose stencil/objects onto paper using the exposure unit or sunlight, if applicable

  • Develop cyanotypes using water and hydrogen peroxide

About the Instructor –  Katrina Shafor

Katrina Shafor (b.1999) is an artist, educator, and advocate based in Cincinnati, OH. Shafor received their BA in Community Arts and BS in Art Education from Miami University in 2022, and an MFA in Fine Arts from the University of Cincinnati in 2024. They specialize in a range of 2D, 3D, and multi-media approaches that include fiber arts, printmaking, and installation. Their work explores feminine expression and childhood loss in ways of nostalgia and remembrance of a past self. Shafor is currently an Adjunct Professor at the University of Cincinnati and Miami University.
