Beginning Letterpress​

Class Description 

In this course, students will learn the fundamentals of setting type by hand, inking, and printing on a
traditional proof press.
 

No prior experience is needed. We’ll start with the basics of typography and composition, then guide
you through the process of transforming your ideas into physical prints using wood and metal type.
 

Along the way, you’ll explore both historic techniques and playful, experimental approaches unique to
hand-crafted printmaking.
 

Letterpress is the foundation of modern communication design, and in this course students will discover
how this centuries-old process continues to influence contemporary design practices today.
 

By the end of the course, students will design and print two original letterpress posters - leaving not only
with finished work, but with an understanding of the tools, techniques, and creative possibilities of this
enduring medium.

About the Instructor

Kate Tepe is a Cincinnati-based designer, artist, and educator whose work brings people
together through print, public projects, and shared creative experiences. With a background in
letterpress, communication design, and community-based practice, she creates work that
invites participation, conversation, and connection.
 

Her projects often explore how design can live beyond the page - whether through
collaborative prints, public installations, or classroom spaces where experimentation and
process are central. She is especially interested in the tactile and time-base nature of
letterpress, and how it can slow us down, encourage play, and make ideas feel more immediate
and human.

Beginning Etching

​​​

Class Description​

This is a beginning course in etching covering hard ground and aquatint on copper. Throughout this course students will learn how to polish and prep copper plates, create a basic line etching, and print an edition from their plates. Each student should leave with a basic understanding of copper etching with ferric chloride, printing one and multiple colors on their plates, transferring images onto plates, and curating and signing prints. Each student will leave this class with an edition of 5 prints from their plates.

Autumn Johnson is an artist from Southeast Ohio who primarily works in etching on copper with themes surrounding nature, identity, and memory. With a BFA from Ohio University and an MFA from Louisiana State University, they have taught and worked in Kentucky, Louisiana, and Michigan.

Carve Your Narrative: Illustrative Storytelling Reductive Relief Class

Class Description

Explore the intersection of printmaking and comics in this hands-on workshop that combines traditional linocut techniques with visual storytelling. Participants will learn how to translate characters, narratives, and sequential imagery into bold relief prints. Students will learn the basics of sketching, carving, inking, registration and printing with an emphasis placed on composition, contrast, and line quality. 

 

Suitable for beginners and experienced artists alike, this class offers an engaging introduction to both linocut relief printmaking and comic art, resulting in a unique printed narrative that participants can take home.

Over the course of 4 weeks we will cover creating an illustrative image, transferring to the block, carving the block, and then printing. We will be using oil-based ink so it will need time to dry as well before printing additional colors on top. Reductive linocut will help with the registration process and incorporate multiple colors.

About the Instructor

Kat Dienno is a printmaker and educator located in Cincinnati, Ohio. She is Visiting Professor at Xavier University where she teaches printmaking, drawing and illustration, and art history. Her current body of work focuses on how women have been represented throughout history and revisits canonical “masterworks” through a contemporary female lens, challenging the historical structures that shaped the art world and determined whose voices were celebrated within it.​​​​

Reduction Screenprinting

​

Class Description

Reduction screenprinting is a painterly way to create screenprints. With one stencil, you’ll use screen filler to progressively add layers to your print, going from the lightest colors to the darkest. You’ll be able to make a 3-4 color print of your very own design using this method, creating an edition of prints to take home at the end. We will go over screenprinting basics such as how to paint screen filler into the screen, select the correct colors and order for reduction printing, and to register and print your design. No previous screenprinting experience is necessary, but some drawing and painting experience is preferred.

Solar Plate Etching: Printing Fun with the Sun!​

​

Class Description

This is a quick, introductory course to Solarplate etching: a photo process that is used to expose photographs and hand-drawn images into metal plates. The Solarplates are coated with a light-sensitve solution that will harden when exposed to UV light. Students will learn to create images and transparencies and how to expose these transparencies into the plates (using either the actual sun or the exposure unit). They will then be able to print an edition of five prints from these plates. All experience levels are welcome! No previous printmaking, drawing, or photography experience required.

Kitchen Lithography​

Class Description

We will be making diy lithographs using materials you can find in your kitchen: aluminum foil and cola! Each participant will be able to create an original lithographic print by drawing an image on a piece of aluminum foil. We will then etch that foil with cola soda, and then sponge, ink, and print from the image. No previous printmaking experience required- each participant will be able to draw, print, and leave with an edition of 5 prints by the end of the workshop

This is a basic workshop in which participants will create their own designs into screens and then print that design using water soluble materials. The results are a beautiful one-of-a-kind print that look very similar to a watercolor painting or drawing. Collage to Collagraph​​

Class Description

This is a beginning course in collagraph printmaking. During this course participants will be able to produce their own abstracted designs through collage, adhere those designs to a plate, and then create prints with those plates through the collagraph process. We will be using textured paper, cardboard, lace, glue, and other textures to create interesting plates and to add value and texture in the final prints. Each participant will leave the class with a unique collagraph plate and an edition of prints.
